Request from Kīlauea School to help ease traffic congestion during afternoon student pick-up

Principal Fig Mitchell attended the November KNA meeting and asked for community members to help ease traffic congestion during the afternoon student pick-up time.

If you are NOT picking up a student, please avoid using the portion of Kolo Road fronting Kīlauea School between 1:45 and 2:15 on M, T, Th, F and between 1:00 and 1:30 on Wednesdays.

He also shared, for people with questions regarding why they no longer use the front field for cars to park for pick-up:

  1. Safety: someone got hit in that area during pick up.
  2. It preserves the condition of the play area for the students.
  3. It only takes 15 minutes from the time the bell rings until the last cars pull into the pick-up area and, on average, parents only spend about 8 minutes in the lineup. All in all, it is a much safer and more efficient system.

Remembering Ron Paul

October 24, 2022

Aloha KNA Board Members and Kīlauea Community,

It is with profound sadness that we share the news that Ron passed away peacefully on October 23. Ron received an unexpected cancer diagnosis in July which unfortunately was discovered too late for any effective treatment.
When Ron moved to Kauaʻi ten years ago, he fell in love with Kīlauea. We had lived in other cities previously, but it was in Kīlauea that Ron felt a strong sense of place and belonging. He found his home. He found people that touched his heart.

Ron dedicated his time here to helping his adopted community. He donated his architectural services to island non-profits, and he was a dedicated volunteer at the North Shore Food Pantry.

But most of all, he was so proud to work alongside all of you as steadfast stewards of Kīlauea, to protect its amazing heritage and access to natural assets, as well as to help plan for the future. He worked behind the scenes well into the night, to insure the best possible outcomes on many projects. As his disease took over, he was unable to continue working, but he still worried about his “to-do” list for KNA. He didn’t want to let you down.

Our family is grieving, but it brings us peace to know how much he loved working for Kīlauea with all of you. Ron would encourage you to keep up the great work. Kīlauea is worth the extra time and effort – and your leadership and volunteer hours really make a difference.

Thanks to everyone who has reached out to us with condolences and generous offers of assistance. It shows so clearly that Kīlauea is indeed a very special place to live.

Mahalo nui loa,
Marion Paul

National Wildlife Refuge Week

You’re invited to join the fun events scheduled as our community comes together to celebrate National Wildlife Refuge Week, which is observed the second full week of October each year.

This annual event celebrates the great network of lands and waters that conserves and protects Americans’ precious wildlife heritage. The Island of Kauaʻi is home to three National Wildlife Refuges – including Hanalei NWR, Hulēʻia NWR and Kīlauea Point NWR – and they partner with Friends of Kauaʻi Wildlife Refuges to help support their mission.
