Meetings & Updates

Līhu‘e Airport Master Plan

Update 8/18:
Based on various meetings with the Kauai Delegation, Technical Advisory Committee, and the Kauai community, the State of Hawaii Department of Transportation, Airports Division (HDOT-A) is canceling the Lihue Airport Master Plan Update. The HDOT-A will conduct an Optimization Plan for improvements at the Lihue Airport. We ask for your patience while we update the lihmasterplan.com into the Lihue Airport Optimization Plan website. Please note that the HDOT-A continues to work closely with the Kauai Delegation, Technical Advisory Committee, the Kauai County Destination Management Plan and the community.

The State of Hawaii Department of Transportation – Airports Division (HDOT-A) is updating the 1989 Lihue Airport Master Plan and 1991 Part 150 Noise Exposure Map and Noise Compatibility Study.

The Master Plan Update will reflect new facilities, current forecasts of aviation activity and new environmental and other regulatory constraints, and plan for the appropriate mix of land uses to support projected aviation and non-aviation needs.

The Part 150 Noise Exposure Map Update will also reflect current and forecast operations at LIH.

The HDOT-A welcomes your participation and feedback. Click HERE for more information.

A petition has been formed to gather names against the growth and expansion of the airport. Click HERE.

Ciguatera Fish Poisoning Survey

I am a researcher at the University of Hawaiʻi conducting a study on the prevalence and impacts of ciguatera fish poisoning in Hawaiʻi. I am doing anonymous online surveys (5-10 minutes) that are open to all fishers and more targeted interviews with fishers who have gotten ciguatera fish poisoning from fish caught in Hawaiʻi (45-60 mins). Because the time commitment is a big ask, interview participants will be compensated $100 for their time and expertise.

If you or anyone else you know might be interested in participating, the survey can be accessed here, and people can contact me at this email ([email protected]) for more information about the interviews. Participants from all islands are welcome!

Kīlauea Egg Hunt

We have some eggs-citing news. Thanks to the dedication and guidance of Nanea Marston and other community members, the Kīlauea Egg Hunt will be held this Saturday at the Kīlauea Ball Park. It is being organized very late so it will not be all that it usually is, but it will be happening.

Thanks to a special volunteer, the Easter Bunny will be there! Free lunches are available to a limited number of kids.  Please see flyer for instructions to preorder lunches.

Update on access to the Mokolea side of Kāhili Beach via Kāhili Quarry Road

Wade Lord of the County of Kauaʻi Public Works Division has provided the following update:

The culvert repair is in the hands of the FEMA “E.H.P.” Group (Environmental Dept), which is in charge of reviewing all plans involving water/wildlife etc.

The plan submitted to FEMA is for returning the culvert to pre-flood damage condition and is not an overall reconstruction to mitigate future storm damage. He has received numerous inquiries since the submission of the original plans with requests to harden/improve the entire culvert. However, to revisit and re-permit for a larger scale repair would take at least another 12-18 months, as there are no resources (meaning private contractors or availability) to review the entire area above and below the impacted site. The County’s in-house surveyors are the ones who went out and submitted the work order, and they are now on to other projects (as there are a lot just on Kauaʻi).

So, in essence, there is a wait time of 2 years from receipt of all estimates. Wade affirmed that that the repair will be solid and will include Geotek and Ripwrap, which stabilizes the soil.  He is confident that it will be a long lasting repair, as their specs include concerns identified from Seacliff runoff and erosion into the flood plain below.

He also shared that, in past experiences, they have gone forward with repairs in other places without FEMA funds in place. However, that approach led to complications and they won’t do that again, even though the desire to reopen the road is vital.
