The next Democratic Party of Kauai biennial precinct meeting will be held on Wednesday, March 4 from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. at the Kilauea Neighborhood Center. The purpose of the precinct meeting is to elect the officers of the precinct (President, Vice President, Secretary/Treasurer, and Council Representative) and the elect the 2 male and 2 female delegates and the 2 male and 2 female alternates for the Kauai County (Saturday, March 28) and State (May 22-24) conventions.
At the Kauai County convention precinct officers and delegates, as well as other members to the convention described in by-laws, will be electing the Democratic Party of Kauai’s County Committee (the Kauai party’s Chair, Vice Chair, Secretary, Treasurer, representatives to the Democratic Party of Hawaii’s State Central Committee and a couple more positions) as well as by-law & rule amendments and adopting resolutions.
Some may question whether precincts are obsolete as we move forward with mail ballots and the prevalence social media. However, in existing State law and a process outlined in the Democratic Party of Hawaii’s constitution, precincts and district councils play a critical role in the selection of names to the Governor when there is a mid-term vacancy for a State Representative or State Senator. That is why it is very important to have the positions filled should this ever happen. And, it has happened before in District 14 when Mina Morita resigned to become Chair of the Public Utilities Commission in 2011.
